The Mindset To Success – Learn From The Best Athletes In Sports

By learning to read behind the lines, you can understand many of the aspects needed for one to succeed. It is a valuable lesson to create the mindset to success.

History has taught us that sports and life itself, have a lot of common ground. For people to succeed either in life or sports, they must start with the right mindset. During the last two decades, we see the best athletes in sports, impact the life of others much more that they used to. This has mostly happened because of the access to technology and the social media exposure, but moreover because the best athletes create hopes to others for success. You can get examples from them and use that as a guideline in your everyday schedule. If they can do it, then why can’t you?

Within this post, I want to share some insights which I consider very important, targeting mostly athletes, but additionally people from any other kind of background, who could relate to the comments below. Some people will be reading something new and others will be refreshing their knowledge.

Success Starts From Your Mindset

There is one question that ‘tortures’ many individuals, who seek to achieve something noticeable during their lives.

Is it finally so hard to be successful or is success achieved when a clear mindset and attributes like hard work, determination, passion, etc, are put together?

There are so many things that people should do in order to be successful. From a healthy lifestyle up to their open mindset. A good reminder though, is that we should always try learning a few things from the best. Many people say that the best athletes have “secret” techniques and that’s why they succeed. In sports through time, this statement has been proven wrong, because (luckily for all of us), all top athletes have already given their insights and “secrets” (through their interviews, biographies, media statements etc.) about what someone should be doing in order to become successful.

Some Facts For Your Consideration

Read a few facts that identify the best athletes in order to have them in mind:

-Messi (probably the best football player of all times): He was rejected by some clubs at a young age because of his height and was also diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Despite that, he is now considered the smallest boy with the biggest dreams in soccer. He was and still is a hard worker both in physical and mental training, despite all the natural born talent his has.

-Tom Brady (currently the best NFL player of all times): he didn’t get his playing opportunity straight away, but he earned the right to play by determination and hard work inside and outside the pitch (mentally and physically).

Serena Williams (probably the best female tennis player of all times): When she was 9 years old, she said that her dream was to become the No.1 female tennis player in the world. And she did it. Hard work, dedication, discipline, belief in herself and determination are words that describe her the best. She also quoted: “If I can do it, then so can you, as long as you truly believe it!”

-Michael Jordan (basketball legend): Two very important quotes that he said: 1) “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed”. 2) “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”

-Usain Bolt (he is considered being the greatest sprinter of all times): Sometimes he didn’t even want to get up to go to training, but he always pushed himself (mentally) to continue training. He said that “competition is the easy part; the difficulties and hard work is always behind the scenes”.

-Roger Federer (currently the greatest tennis player of all times): His key to success (besides of course his love and passion for tennis) was that since his young age he was setting up short-term and long-term goals. He didn’t stop until he had achieved his goals. Going from one goal to another goal. This is what’s keeping him going even today.

Michael Phelps (the most successful and most decorated Olympian swimmer of all times): He said: “I had a dream when I was a kid and I was not afraid to dream big. Dedication and hard work put me where I am now”.

Tiger Woods (one of the best golfers of all times): He said that he did things differently than other golfers. He trained differently, he run every day like a long-distance runner and he lifted weights. That’s what helped him to succeed. By doing things differently than others.

Understanding to Read Behind the Lines

From all the mentioned facts and information above, what is the actual point?

It seems that if we add up the information given to us by each one of those athletes, we can understand some really important points. They teach us that despite the natural talent or strong character, we MUST also:

– Work hard every day.

– Devote extra time and energy to work more than others.

– Work harder to improve our weaknesses and at the same time to keep our advantages.

– Do what others are bored to do or fed up with.

– Avoid finding excuses and don’t blame others for not reaching our goals yet.

– Educate our-self in learning our sport/job better than others and always look to find new ways to improve.

– Set goals and targets (short term and long term) and be clear in our mind for what we want to achieve.

– Dream and visualize our future success.

– Keep getting up after a fall. Keep trying.

– Understand that failure doesn’t mean quitting, but it’s something that will make us mentally stronger.

Take Advantage of the Information

Each person has a unique character, personality and beliefs. By taking advantage of the “secrets” coming from the best athletes in all sports, then we can get closer to what we want to achieve.

Many times, we hear people saying that “hard work pays off”. That’s correct, even though it doesn’t necessarily mean it pays off financially. There is much more than that. Success for some people means thousands or even millions of dollars, for others it means fame and recognition, for others it means both, for others it means providing for their family and for others it means finding a way of life and their role in society, a mission. There is no right and wrong from the moment you really love what you do, respect yourself and others, learn from your mistakes and be humble for your achievements and success.

It’s All About the Mindset

This is a wake-up call to all of us, that success doesn’t come easy and it cannot be bought or hand fully given. Fortunately there are ways to follow and improve both as athletes and human beings. Starting with our mindset!

And here is the key point. When success comes, expectations become higher and that’s where you must keep working even harder to maintain it!!!

– PS1. Your luck will definitely kick off, after you set your mindset in connection with all the above points.

– PS2. Choose the hard and long way than the easy and short one. You will be surprised by the outcome but you will also be positively surprised of how often people judge the process and not the final results.

– PS3. PS1 and PS2 must be performed together!!!

Feel free to share this post and leave a comment below with any questions or ideas or even your own experiences. I would be happy to hear from you.

  1. Hey,

Mindset is so important and who better to learn how to have a strong mindset than from an athlete. Especially with the way of the world at the minute, our mindset is strained with the self isolation due to coronavirus. It’s even more important that we work on our minds to keep them strong.

I love how informative and insightful your article is. Keep up the amazing work on your website.

  4. I agree 100% to look at the best athletes because when I watch and learn what they did in their training to get where they are today I am always amazed at how they were able to keep going. It’s so easy to say to my self “I can’t do that” however each and everyone of us has the strength and capability to succeed in anything that we put our mind to get.

As Less Brown would say, “You got ta be HUNGRY”
